The premises at 11 High Street , Glastonbury, was purchased in July 2003. The purpose was to produce
a new street with a Victorian theme.
Douglas Hill, Proprietor of the Enterprise says: "This groundbreaking scheme will make history.
It is the first new street created in the centre of Glastonbury for hundreds of years and the first
public access enjoyed on this very site since medieval times". He added that the "idea is based around
a traditional thoroughfare which will be favourable to modern day needs."
The premises have been named The Gauntlet so named as it represented a monumental challenge
(throwing down the gauntlet) along with the linear shaped pedestrianised walkway flanked by
traders (running the gauntlet).
Another Spokesperson said: "Several planning applications were made to bring about
permanent change to the town of Glastonbury, offering a new dimension and an added
tourist attraction creating a larger sustainable trading area."
It offers unique possibilities for businesses within the project. The traders will
have a central trading position which links the High Street to St John's Car Park,
attracting lots of passing trade. The units will be at affordable rent levels.
The Gauntlet Traders Association will be formed to enable the traders to work together.
This will allow them to organise joint promotions, any charity fund raising and strive
for excellence by maintaining new high standards by helping each other. The Gauntlet
Enterprise Scheme will give traders an added income stream by connecting into The Gauntlet
website to sell their own products in their own online shops.
Doug Hill concluded: "The Gauntlet will become a real asset to Glastonbury,
encouraging more visitors together with additional revenue, so maintaining
amenities and generally improving the welfare of the town."
